M. David writes from a secluded location in the heart of Tokyo. Surrounded by a variety of inconvenient Yokai, Yurei, and a pair of very lazy hounds, M. Questions and Answers

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? A: When I was very young, I “wrote” a book with my aunt. Helping to build a story with the support of an adult that I looked up to really helped me to not question myself or my ability (that would come later). I do not know if I realized I wanted to be a writer, I just knew I could. Craft, dedication, and all the things that go into creating a real experience in a book have taken a lifetime to develop, and I am still working on all of those elements.

Q: How long does it take you to write a book? A: Well, that depends on the needs of the book. Some I finish in a month, others take years. Planning is essential for me and I overlap projects so that I can complete both short-term and long-term writing in a reasonable manner. For various values of reasonable. Publishing a book, on the other hand can take me approximately 6 months from completed final draft to release date.

Q: What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? A: Minimum 2,500 words per day, every day. 10,000 words or more on days that I do not work my day job. I negotiate a target with myself over breakfast. There are scars.

Q: Do you really live in Tokyo? A: Yes. I really live in Tokyo. Tokyo is really made up of 23 wards, each of which is its own city. My home is in one of these wards, and I can often be seen walking my dogs or doing other sorts of things like shopping for food, going to shrines, and attending matsuri (festivals).
